Chennai: The winners have all but been decided in the RMYC-Vestas 420 National sailing championship; only the formalities remain to be completed when the 10th and the final race is held on Saturday. AYN’s Pushparajan Muthu and Sandip Jain breezed to victories in eight of the nine races. Rohini Rau and Pallavi Shanbag have sailed home first in all the nine races among women. Given that the sailors will be allowed two discards in 10 races, the two pairs have more than a hand on the winners’ trophy. Creditably, RMYC’s Rohini and Pallavi breached into the top five of the overall category. “The swells were higher today and the conditions were quite challenging. There was more wind at the top of the waves and less at the bottom,” said Rohini on Friday. She complimented partner Pallavi, competing in her maiden Nationals in this section, for a promising display. Both Rohini and Sandip spoke about the team-work in this category. One sailor steers the boat and handles the main sail — he is called Helm — and the other — the Crew — balances the boat by hiking out on the trapeze wire.

Narandra and Luhach, 3. K. Yakobu and Bikash Kumar (AWSA). 3rd race: 1. Pushparajan and Sandip, 2. Narandra and Luhach, 3. Nahak and Shaikh. Women: 1st race: 1. Rohini Rau and Pallavi Shanbhag (RMYC ), 2. Aysha Lobo and Taramathi Matiwade (RBYC). 2nd race: 1. Rau and Pallavi, 2. Aysha and Taramathi. 3rd race: Rohini and Pallavi, 2. Aysha and Taramathi. Thursday’s results (men’s second race modified after protest hearing): 1. Yakobu and Bikash, 2. Narandra and Luhach, 3. Nahak and Shaikh.
