Steps to expedite transport of bodies of Dubai fire victims

HYDERABAD: Power Minister Mohd. Ali Shabbir assured agitated members in the Assembly on Friday that the government would take steps to expedite bringing back bodies of the 10 persons from the State who were killed in a fire accident in Dubai recently.

Mr. Shabbir Ali said the Chief Minister had already spoken to Ministers Pranab Mukherjee and Vayalar Ravi. The government was ready to provide assistance and bear the expenses therein.

The government had already announced an immediate ex gratia of Rs.1 lakh to the kith of the victims, besides pension and housing.

His assurance came after K. Ramulu (Janata Party), whose adjournment notice on the issue was disallowed by Deputy Speaker G. Kuthuhalamma, rushed into the well and stalled the proceedings demanding a statement by government. He was supported by other opposition members. He said since the victims—nine belonging to Karimnagar and one to Nizamabad---had gone to Dubai on a tourist visa and later stayed back, local authorities had stated that they were not eligible for compensation.
