TIRUCHI: Gyan Vani, an FM station run by the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), is likely to be on air in Tiruchi in another three months time.

Transponders

Orders have been placed for three transponders for establishing studios in Tiruchi, Tirunelveli and Madurai.

The studio in Tiruchi will be established either in the Bharathidasan University or the IGNOU study centre at Bishop Heber College, K. Panneer Selvam, Regional Director, IGNOU, Madurai, told The Hindu on Friday.

The radio stations, exclusively meant for broadcasting educational programmes, will be 24 hour-channels.

Tiruchi being a major educational centre, the FM station will cater to the academic requirements of students.

Focus would be on delivering skill oriented language training for students, said Dr. Selvam.

Two Gyan Vani stations with a range of 60 kilometres each are currently functional in Tamil Nadu at the Anna University in Chennai and GRD College of Science in Coimbatore.

For now, these FM channels are on air for 12 hours a day. It includes two hours of live programmes.

They serve the purpose of bridging the gap between the educationally privileged and the deprived.

The Union Ministry of Information and Broadcasting had given licence to IGNOU for running 40 FM stations for educational broadcast. The Ministry of Human Resource Development that provides overall support for the FM stations had nominated IGNOU as the nodal agency to implement the scheme and the Ministry of Telecommunications had allotted the frequency (105.4 MHz).

IGNOU has been given right to identify and select the partner institutions.
