Pallam Raju to visit Lebanon

He will hold parleys with Lebanese Government

8,875 Indian soldiers part of UN peace-keeping missions


Kakinada: Union Minister of State for Defence M.M Pallam Raju is going to meet Indian peace-keeping forces at Lebanon on September 9 to boost their morale amidst attempts to spread canards against them by certain vested interests.

He will also hold parleys with representatives of Lebanese Government to set the record straight so that the Indian soldiers stay firmly committed to maintaining peace in the strife-torn nation.

Speaking to reporters here on Friday, Mr. Pallam Raju said tension prevails in the Middle Eastern region following the invasion of Lebanon by Israel and occupation of Jordan by Palestine. Besides, Israel is fighting the Hezbollah. The 882-strong Indian peace-keeping force is in charge of the eastern parts of Lebanon against the backdrop of a misinformation campaign being waged by forces inimical to them.

The situation required allaying of apprehensions on the deployment of Indian peace-keepers and ensuring their safety and resoluteness to accomplish their task under the aegis of United Nations.

Global presence

Lebanon has the world’s third largest contingent of UN peace-keeping forces which are striving for withdrawal of Israel and to keep other separatists outfits at bay. The Minister said that 8,875 Indian soldiers are currently part of the UN peace-keeping missions around the world. Till now, India has contributed over 90,000 troops to 43 such missions. The track record of Indian peace-keepers has always been impeccable and their services globally acclaimed, Mr. Pallam Raju asserted.
