THE CHAMPIONS: St. Joseph’s College of Engineering team, winner- of the Dr. K.C.G. Varghese Memorial Trophy on Thursday.

Chennai: With an impressive display of attack and defence, St. Joseph’s College of Engineering claimed the Dr. K.C.G. Varghese Memorial Trophy in the invitation tournament organised by the Chennai District Volleyball Association at the Mayor Radhakrishnan Stadium, here on Thursday.

St. Joseph’s outclassed Hindustan Sports Foundation in 25-13, 25-8 to cliam the Rs.10,000 cash prize. Hindustan Foundation won Rs. 7,000.

Almost from the first serve, it was evident that St. Joseph’s was in a different league. With captain Gowri, well supported by Tharani Priya and Sindhu, excelling in everything she did, it was no surprise when St. Joseph’s built up a substantial lead of 15-8.

As the set progressed, St. Joseph’s kept up the tempo, thanks largely to the neat drop shots played by Sindhu.

Jisha Jose and Jeena George did their best to retrieve the situation for Hindustan but the rival defence proved too strong.

After winning the first set at 25-13, St. Joseph’s increased the pace of attack in the second and built up a lead of 20-6 in no time. That it finally won at 25-8 surprised none.

GKM claimed the third place and prize money of Rs. 5,000, followed by Panimalar which picked up Rs. 4,000. GKM won 25-21, 18-25, 25-20.

Wednesday’s results: Men: Integral Coach Factory bt SDAT 25-18, 25-15, 25-13; Indian Overseas Bank bt Indian Bank 22-25, 25-21, 25-21, 25-21.

Women: St. Joseph’s bt Panimalar 26-24, 25-22; Hindustan Sports Foundation bt GKM 28-26, 9-25, 25-17. — Special Correspondent
