Barnala wants teachers to be role models for students

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: Governor Surjit Singh Barnala has urged teachers to be role models for their students and stand for the ideals of their profession.

Greeting teachers on the occasion of Teachers’ Day, Mr. Barnala said the quality of education depended on the quality of teachers, who played a vital role in building the nation’s future. Former President Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan, in whose memory Teacher’s Day is being celebrated, had emphasised that moral qualities were of greater value than intellectual accomplishments, Mr. Barnala said.

Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi congratulated the winners of the Best Teacher Awards and wished teachers the best. He also outlined the schemes being implemented for the welfare of teachers.

PMK founder S. Ramadoss said Dr. Radhakrishnan’s suggestion that education up to the higher level be pursued in the mother tongue must be considered in right earnest and the teachers must champion this cause.

Desiya Murkpokku Dravidar Kazhagam president Vijayakant said it was important to take a vow to make education available to all on the occasion of Teachers’ Day.
