Good water

The editorial “Preserving good water” (Sept. 3) should serve as an eye-opener to all, especially those at the helm of affairs. Although we have in India a large number of water resources, very few of them give us good water. Water is precious and the natural sources of good water should be maintained well. But what we see is the rampant pollution of rivers. Factories, hospitals, hotels, slaughter houses and dwelling places have come up along river banks. Another hazard is unscrupulous sand mining from riverbeds. The government should take immediate action to preserve good water by enacting suitable laws for the protection of rivers.

K.K. Narayanan Nair,

Ernakulam

To solve the problem of excess water consumption, we must take a few immediate steps. The government should insist on rain-water harvesting.

As a child, I remember seeing messages on television on saving water. They seem to be a rarity nowadays. To make sure that such messages reach a wider audience, both the national and private television channels should air them during prime time. College students must be urged to distribute pamphlets among the young.

Pankaj B. Singh,

Chennai
