KOLKATA: All the seeded players had it easy in the opening round of the 20th The Telegraph Schools’ chess tournament, here on Tuesday. The tournament has attracted a record 314 participants including 47 rated players. Local boy and top seed Satyajit Kundu, having the advantage of white, easily got past local challenger Majima Mahalanobish. Second seed Sayantan Das also had an easy outing against Malyajit Raha in a two knights opening. Girish Kaushik of Karnataka, fresh from his triumph in the National under-11 championship at Ahmedabad, led a group of around 20 players who came straight to the venue after arriving from the national meet on Tuesday. Kaushik, also the current Asian under-12 champion and a former World under-10 champion, got the better of local challenger Manjis Majumdar. On the third board Hemant Sharma of Delhi crushed local boy Manash Sengupta. Difficult gameAnother Delhi player, Prince Bajaj, who has a silver in the World under-8 category, had a relatively difficult outing but managed to hold out against Manish Kumar of Bihar.
