Thiruvananthapuram
Thiruvananthapuram was one of the 100 cities selected Aim was to give health care to the poor urban populace THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Union government has, for the time being, scrapped the National Urban Health Mission (NUHM) aimed at providing basic healthcare to the urban population, especially slum dwellers and other disadvantaged sections. Besides the four metros in the country, Thiruvananthapuram was one of the 100 cities selected for the implementation of the NUHM in the first phase by the Union Health and Family Welfare Ministry. The Rs.9,000-crore mission was to be launched by the middle of August by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. “It has now been confirmed by the Centre that the NUHM has been scrapped for the time being in view of the fund diversion for the farmers’ debt waiver scheme,” a top State Health official told The Hindu. The five-year mission was to target the remaining 329 cities in the second phase. It was estimated that the NUHM would benefit 22 crore people in the urban population, with focus on five crore slum dwellers. Thiruvananthapuram was included in the mission as the plan was to include all cities with a population above one lakh, State capitals and even district headquarters. ‘A big blow’The District Hospitals in the capital would have benefited from the mission. The Health authorities in Kerala had even finalised the General Hospital as the nodal urban care centre. “The decision is a big blow to Kerala,” said Project Director of the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) Dinesh Arora. The mission plan was to set up 4,500 Urban Health Centres as focal points. Each centre was to act as referral point with facilities of out-patient care, immunisation and maternal healthcare.
