KOCHI: The return of former Asian Satellite champion Thomas Kurian adds an interesting angle to the Seshasayee State senior badminton championship which begins at the FACT’s Udyogamandal Club, Eloor, on Wednesday. With many promising players switching from singles to doubles, the seasoned K. A. Anish has virtually had a free run in men’s singles but the presence of ONGC’s Thomas, a Thomas Cupper who was in the powerful Petroleum team for a few years, should bring back the glamour to the championship. Thomas has been given the top billing while defending champion Anish is the second seed. The women’s field, however, has lost much of its charm with Thrissur’s defending champion P. C. Thulasi away on foreign tour. State junior champion Daya Elsa Jacob has been given the pride of place in the event while National champion Sanave Thomas and the experienced Jaseel Ismail have been top-seeded in men’s doubles. The five-day championship, which will be inaugurated by A. Ashokan, FACT’s Director (Marketing), begins with the inter-district events tomorrow morning. Nearly 100 players will be seen in action. — Principal Correspondent
