Tamil Nadu reigns supreme

JAMSHEDPUR: Tamil Nadu reigned supreme retaining the overall championship of the 20th National inter-zonal junior athletic meet at the JRD Tata Sports Complex here on Tuesday. By winning 23 gold, 20 silver and 11 bronze medals, the Tamil Nadu contingent swept the boys’ (10-10-5) and girls’ (13-10-06) group championship as well. Uttar Pradesh finished second and Haryana third.

On the third and final day, as many as seven National marks and four meet records were established. That all the records fell in the under-18 age group meant the wards and their coaches took this meet seriously because this was billed as the selection trials for the Commonwealth Youth Games at Pune.

Chief junior National coach, Suresh Babu, has shortlisted 52 boys and 46 girls for intensive coaching before naming the Indian contingent for the upcoming Games.
