Rebel cricket league gets a jolt

Glendale Academy snaps ties with ICL for promoting school cricket

HCA says any tie-up with ICL will automatically mean a ban on Glendale and also players

Glendale Academy retracting from ICL deal may trigger a cyclic effect on enthusiasts

HYDERABAD: Indian Cricket League, a parallel set-up promoted by the Essel Group and scheduled to commence its second edition next month here, got a jolt when the much publicised tie-up with Glendale Academy for promoting school cricket got snapped.

The move came from the Academy itself as it had to face some embarrassing moments, courtesy Hyderabad Cricket Association (HCA), an affiliate of the BCCI which governs the sport in India.

“In the interest of the players and the future of their cricket, we have decided to withdraw our deal with ICL. A formal intimation will be sent to the HCA to clear all its doubts,” explains Mohd Umri, Administrate Head of Glendale.

The Academy had initially signed up with ICL for a year for popularising schools cricket and the ICL too had distributed T-shirts and caps with insignia on them.

“But soon, we came to know from HCA that any tie-up with ICL will automatically mean a ban not only just on Glendale but also players taking part in it,” he said. Effectively, it meant the Academy’s tournaments would have no legitimacy if it tied up with ICL.

ICL in spot

For ICL organisers, who might find it extremely difficult to sustain the passion generated here during its inaugural session last year, especially after the super success of the high-profile Indian Premier League (IPL), it has come as a bolt from the blue.

Glendale Academy retracting from the ICL deal might trigger a cyclic effect on other prospective enthusiasts for no one in the cricketing circles will be in a mood to take on the establishment.

“We did not want to face any problems and wish to be associated with HCA for all the obvious reasons,” said Mr. Umri. Not a healthy sign for ICL.
