Hyderabad
Express(way) behind schedule
HYDERABAD: It was launched amid much fanfare. Loud proclamations were made from every platform. Promises were made and denizens were assured repeatedly about its timely completion. Commuters were promised a smooth ride to the new airport by the time flights commence and those who pinned their hopes on the promise, hardly realised they were being taken for a ride.
The Rajiv Gandhi International Airport at Shamshabad has turned fully operational months back, but the widely publicised P.V. Narasimha Rao Elevated Expressway, touted as the country’s longest expressway, shows no signs of becoming operational in the immediate future. It is lagging behind schedule and even the directions of Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy on the schedules apparently failed to spur any results. From March 2008, the deadline was shifted to October and now a not-too-sure date of March 2009 is being offered by the body which, while failing to realise the 11.5 km expressway in time, did manage to widen its jurisdiction and rechristen itself from HUDA to Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority. Offering uninterrupted access from Mehdipatnam to the airport, the delay in the project has made travel a nightmarish affair for those rushing to catch a flight or returning home.
