Universities to come up in Kakinada and Anantapur besides Hyderabad

Trifurcation for administrative viability and better monitoring

HYDERABAD: The Legislative Council on Monday passed the Jawaharlal Nehru Technological Universities Bill, 2008 for trifurcation of JNTU and setting up universities in Kakinada and Anantapur besides Hyderabad.

Members suggested that the division of JNTU should not result in diluting its brand value and the JNTU universities at Anantapur and Kakinada should be developed on par with JNTU Hyderabad in terms of infrastructure, faculty and resources.

Earlier Technical Education Minister R. Chenga Reddy, who moved the bill, explained the need to divide JNTU with 652 engineering colleges under its jurisdiction into three regions for administrative viability and better monitoring.

Special status

He also moved Jawaharlal Nehru Architecture and Fine Arts University Bill, separating architecture and Fine Arts from JNTU and according special status to architecture and fine arts in view of their growing importance.

K. Nageshwar (Graduates) said each of the JNTUs should have a specialisation status depending on local resources and developments in their regions like oil exploration, energy, mining. Chukka Ramaiah (Teachers) said the faculty should be filled with local candidates.

P. V. Ranga Rao (Congress) suggested inclusion of a provision to nominate MLCs to the Academic Senates of these universities.
