FACELIFT: A view of the Srirangam Railway Station where developmental works are under way. — TIRUCHI: Various developmental works being executed by the Railways at Srirangam railway station with a view to giving it a facelift are progressing at a fast pace and expected to be completed by December. The works are being implemented at a cost of over Rs. 1.16 crore. As part of the station improvement works, Kota stones are being laid on platform 1 at a cost of Rs. 26.75 lakh. This platform is being raised to enable passengers alight and board BG trains easily. Alongside this work, improvements are being made in the circulating area of the station where many long distance express and super-fast trains halt. The Railways has earmarked a sum of Rs. 30 lakh for raising platforms 2 and 3 to broad gauge standards. Yet another major work is the construction of a sub-way connecting all the three platforms. The divisional railway authorities have submitted a Rs. 31 lakh proposal to the Railway Board through the Southern Railway headquarters for extension of platforms 2 and 3 to accommodate 24-coach trains. The proposal is under active consideration, a senior official here told The Hindu. The Railways has also planned to construct shelters on all the three platforms at a cost of Rs. 60 lakh besides a passenger care centre.
