Soorya arts festival to cover more cities

Arts festival to begin in city on September 21

Thiruvananthapuram: The Soorya festival will travel to four more cities in the country from this year, spread over 101 days. The arts festival, scheduled to begin in the city on September 21, will now be held in 10 more districts in the State besides Chennai, Bangalore, Mumbai and New Delhi.

Industrialist and NRI Ravi Pillai will inaugurate the festival at Tagore Theatre. It will begin with a special show by national award winning contemporary dance troupe Samudra, followed by the world premier of Priyadarshan’s Tamil film Kancheepuram.

More than 1,000 artistes from all over the country are expected to take part in the 101-day-long festival which is entering its 31st year. Veteran artistes, including Padma Subramaniam, Yesudas, Shobhana, Priyadarshini Govind, Bombay Jayasree and T.M. Krishna, will grace the Soorya Dance and Music festival to be held from October 1 to 10. A new event to be featured this year is ‘Jalsa Ghar,’ which includes 10 chamber music concerts. The Jalsa Ghar music festival will be similar to intimate theatre where the musicians evolve their performance through audience interaction. Ramesh Narayan, Gayathri, Sreenivasan, Kudamaloor Janardhanan, Athira Kodamballi and Prince Ravi Varma will take part in Jalsa Ghar to be held from November 11 to 20 at the Swathi Tirunal School of Music.

Adoor Gopalakrishnan’s Naalu Penungal, Shyamaprasad’s Ore Kadal, Pakistani film Khuda Ke Liye, Chak De India, Taare Zameen Par, Sarkar Raj and Jodha Akbar are among the films to be screened in the Soorya Film Festival from September 21 to 30. Other film-based events are Cross Section of World Cinema, which will showcase 10 milestone movies of world cinema, Meet the Masters showcasing four films by Guru Dutt, Hollywood Today, Indian Mainstream and children’s film festival, Pied Piper.

Sukumar Azhikode, Sara Joseph, K.E.N. and Abdul Nasir Maudany will be among those who will take part in the Talk Festival to be held as part of the Soorya Festival from October 11 to October 20 at Co-bank Auditorium. The Theatre festival is dedicated to celebrated playwright K.T. Mohammed who passed away earlier this year. Ramayanam Mela, Parampara dance festival, Mohiniyattom Festival and poetry and story-telling sessions have also been included.
