High school students told to create e-mail ID Videos and software without academic relevance should not be downloaded Thiruvananthapuram: The IT@School Project of the General Education Department has directed all high schools in the State to facilitate minimum five hours’ Internet accessibility for students of Class VIII and IX and 10 hours for students of Class X. In a directive issued ahead of installing broadband connectivity in schools, the IT@School Project on Sunday directed school authorities to ensure that the students were well trained in Internet browsing, including search engines, e-mails, blogging and chatting. The directive said schools should most importantly ensure that there is no misuse of the Internet. The broadband Internet modem will be connected to a computer server, access to which would be restricted by password. All computers should have the latest anti-virus programme and the Internet usage of students should be recorded in a log book. Students should be allowed to access the Internet only after getting the permission of the teacher concerned. Teachers’ roleAll high school students have been told to create their own personal e-mail IDs. Before training students in surfing, the teachers should ensure that the web sites accessed by students contained genuine information and are of academic or educational relevance. Computers with Internet facility should be installed only in the school computer lab. No other information, videos or software should be downloaded other than those needed for academic and administrative purposes of the school. It is also mandatory to ensure effective control measures and security facilities of web browsers to avoid access to web sites with malicious content. SSLC students have been asked to list at least two activities related to Internet in the worksheet of the IT practical record books, from the next academic year. It is mandatory for students to be trained in accessing necessary data from the Internet, including exam results and filing online applications. The IT@School Project executive director has also instructed school IT coordinators to distribute IT handbooks and complete the IT training of all teachers by November. The hardware training for school IT Coordinators is progressing in all districts of the State. The sample of this directive and log book is available on the web site www.itschool.gov.in.
