THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The monsoon has turned hyperactive in rain-deficit South Kerala, bringing upwards of 10 cm of rain in some places in the region during the 24 hours ended at 8.30 a.m. on Sunday. Very heavy rainfall was recorded by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) in Thiruvananthapuram (13 cm) and Kollam (11 cm). Interior parts of Pathanamthitta and Idukki districts, constituting the catchments of major hydroelectric reservoirs in the State, too received heavy rainfall. The IMD recorded 10 cm of rainfall at Thodupuzha in Idukki district. According to the IMD forecast, this spell of monsoon activity is likely to continue over the State during the next two or three days. A significant low-altitude north-south trough has formed along the eastern coast of the country from Bihar to Tamil Nadu with an embedded cyclonic circulation. More rainThis will bring scattered to fairly widespread rain or thundershowers in Kerala also, along with Coastal Karnataka, Lakshadweep, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Bihar during the next 48 hours, according to the department.
