CHENNAI: The “Master and Akka” of Bharatakalaanjali - the Dhananjayans - were on Saturday conferred with the title of Natana-Prakaasam by monthly music journal Naadhabrahmam. The award was presented to V.P.Dhananjayan and Shanta Dhananjayan for their immense contribution to the field of art for over 60 years and to mark 40 years of their dance school Bharatakalaanjali and the 70th birth year of Mr. Dhananjayan. Conferring the title, President of The Music Academy and The Hindu Managing Director N.Murali, said that the Dhananjayans, as the torch bearers of the Kalakshetra tradition, are versatile geniuses having choreographed many wonderful, creative productions. “As gurus they share their knowledge very generously, give lot of mental, physical and spiritual space to students wherever they are,” he added. Mr.Dhananjayan was an accomplished dancer who has spoken against the discrimination of male dancers. Dancer Vyjayanthi Mala Bali said ‘Sadhana’ had made the Dhananjayans’ what they were today. The couple, she said, had preserved the Kalakshetra tradition while still doing a lot of contemporary work. President of the Federation of City Sabhas R.Krishnaswami recalled how Mr.Dhananjayan had provided remarkable support to Narada Gana Sabha in its fledgling years. He praised the Dhananjayans for recognising accompanying artists. Additional Solicitor General Mohan Parasaran appreciated the couple for the innovations in dance while maintaining the balance between the classic and contemporary and hoped that they would be conferred with Padma awards. A special edition of Naadhabrahmam focussing on the Dhananjayans was released on the occasion. Editor of the journal N.Subramanian participated.
