MKU certificates ‘unofficially’ issued in Mizoram

Shastry V. Mallady

MADURAI: Malpractices of a private individual issuing provisional degree certificates of Madurai Kamaraj University to students were detected at the varsity’s study centre in the north-eastern State of Mizoram.

An enquiry team from MKU, which visited the study centre at Aizawal (in Mizoram) for spot inspection, officially conveyed to varsity administration that the complaints/allegations received against the functioning of that centre were genuine.

R. Karpaga Kumaravel, Vice-Chancellor, told The Hindu here on Saturday that appropriate action would be taken against the study centre and the varsity might even cancel its recognition and remove it from the list of approved centres.

Explaining about Mizoram complaints, he said that the matter came to light when representations came from a few students that the private individuals who were authorised for running MKU study centre “were themselves issuing provisional certificates to distance education students without the knowledge of the university.”

According to sources in the Directorate of Distance Education, the Aizawal study centre has been giving course completion certificate/temporary provisional certificate to candidates who passed out, which it is not supposed to do. A team of senior officials visited the Mizoram centre to probe in to its functioning and presented a report to the Vice-Chancellor.

“We will take up the matter in the coming Syndicate meeting (in September) and take a decision on cancelling the centre’s approval,” Dr. Karpaga Kumaravel said.

He said periodical review meetings were being organised to ensure that precautionary steps were in place for checking malpractices.
