‘Hunger strike’: Members of the Federation of Central Universities Teachers’ Association (FEDCUTA) on a dharna at the UGC office in New Delhi on Friday.
NEW DELHI: The Federation of Central Universities’ Teachers’ Associations staged a protest and its office-bearers observed a hunger strike outside the University Grants Commission office here on Friday demanding early submission of the report of the Pay Review Committee.
A number of teachers from Delhi-based Central Universities, including Delhi University, Jawaharlal Nehru University, Indira Gandhi National Open University, Jamia Millia Islamia and Jamia Hamdard along with Aligarh Muslim University joining the protest.
“A delegation comprising all the FEDCUTA office-bearers met UGC Chairman S.K. Thorat. The deliberations went on for two hours. We stressed that the teaching community should be given their rightful due in the pay revision immediately. We strongly urged the chairman not to grant any extension to the Pay Review Committee, the tenure of which is ending on September 5,” said FEDCUTA president Aditya Narayan Misra on Friday.
“Though Prof. Thorat agreed with us on a lot of issues, he did not give us any concrete assurance. We are now planning to take out a protest march from Ferozeshah Kotla to the UGC office on September 17.”
