Tuticorin
NOISY SCENES: Commotion at the corporation council meeting in Tuticorin on Friday. TUTICORIN: The recently upgraded Tuticorin Corporation’s second council meeting held here on Friday witnessed acrimonious scenes as members of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam locked horns over submitting a petition to Mayor during the meeting. As the meeting commenced, the AIADMK member Jayabharathi tried to hand over a petition seeking basic amenities to the Mayor Kasthuri Thangam, who refused to accept it saying that she would entertain the councilor’s petition after the end of the meeting. Even as Ms. Jayabharathi was pressing her demand, other AIADMK councillors raised their voice in support of their party member, prompting the DMK councillors to oppose it. As the argument was going on and the agenda for the meeting was being read, the AIADMK members gathered in front of the Mayor in support of Ms. Jayabharathi and the DMK members too charged towards their political rivals. Even as sloganeering submerged the council hall, the AIADMK members squatted in front of the Mayor and urged her to accept the petition from the councillor of the Opposition party. When Independent member Shenbaga Selvan took the microphone and asked the DMK and the AIADMK members to go to their seats and discuss the people’s problems, some of the ruling party councillors tried to attack him and a couple of tables and chairs were thrown on the floor. Absolute commotion prevailed in the council hall for more than ten minutes and nothing could be heard clearly. Agendas for the meeting could be passed only after normality returned.
