CHENNAI: A two-day talent search programme was launched by the All India Youth Congress here on Thursday to identify second rung leaders in the State for utilising them in rejuvenating the party at the grassroots level.

All India Youth Congress president Ashok Tanwar told The Hindu that the programme was initiated by Rahul Gandhi. Presently, only those who had access to the high command were able to get party posts.

Genuine leaders and workers involved in field work were not rewarded.

The purpose of the programme was to identify such leaders and workers and give them suitable positions for better utilisation of their talent. Mr. Tanwar said a six-member team had completed the exercise in 15 States.

After completing the programme in all States, the team would prepare a list of leaders. Those selected would be invited to New Delhi, where they would be trained in party affairs and briefed about welfare programmes initiated by the Centre. After the training, they would be asked to conduct awareness programmes and public meetings on the features of National Rural Employment Guarantee Programme, usefulness of the Right to Information Act and the benefits of the Indo-US nuclear deal. Mr.Tanwar said the team would assess the leaders’ communication skills, involvement in party and social activities, organisational ability and vision. They would be asked to give their suggestions for making the party vibrant.

About 400 Youth Congress activists would be interviewed during the two-day programme.

He said the Youth Congress wanted to strengthen the organisational set up and, as a first step, would conduct elections to various party posts. As a pilot move, it would conduct organisational elections for the Youth Congress in Punjab.

A membership campaign had been launched in the State. Subsequently it would be extended to other States.

Apart from Mr. Tanwar, the team consists of former Union Minister Jagdish Tytler, Sachin Pilot and Deepender Hooda MPs, AICC secretary Jitendra Singh and former Youth Congress general secretary Saleem Ahamed.
