MADURAI: Sophisticated drug delivery is no longer new to patients visiting Government Rajaji Hospital, as syringe pump using epidural space for delivering drugs has been put to practice. According to A. Raja Manoharan, Professor and Head, Department of Anaesthesia, maintaining continued accuracy in drug delivery has always been a difficult proposition for doctors. Thanks to advancements in the field of medicine, now patient controlled analgesia using syringe pumps has become a common affair in Western countries. In European countries, patients, with the help of computerised syringe pumps, could control the quantity and dosage timings of the drug with effective locking period. Though it might take time for that technology to arrive at GRH, the hospital had already received six syringe pumps, he said. For the first time at GRH, a syringe pump had been used for post-operative analgesia to manage pain, he said. It was used for a patient who had undergone surgery for umbilical hernia. Relief from pain“Pain relief for this patient is mandatory and life saving since it will improve respiration. Hence, we used syringe pump to deliver drugs into the epidural space of the patient, who is now totally relieved of pain,” he said.
