Over four lakh workers trained

Staff Reporter

COIMBATORE: The Coimbatore regional office of the Central Board for Workers’ Education has so far trained about 4.8 lakh workers, according to its director C.K. Regi.

Speaking at the Golden Jubilee celebrations of the board here recently, she also explained the activities taken up by the board for organised and unorganised sector workers. Bharathiar University Vice-Chancellor G. Thiruvasagam welcomed the efforts by the board to update the programmes according to the changing trends.

India was competing with the Asian tigers such as China, Singapore, Korea and Malaysia in a globalised economy and hence it was essential to develop the skills and qualifications of the workers accordingly.

Revenue

President of the Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry D. Balasundaram said the State received 20 per cent of its revenue from the agricultural sector, 30 per cent from the manufacturing sector and 50 per cent from the service sector.

Hence, the board should organise more programmes for those working in the service sector.

Hind Mazdoor Sabha leader A. Subramaniam said in the coming years, units should not only focus on development the skill and knowledge of its employees but should also take care of their social needs.
