Bharath, vice-chairman, CII, Madurai zone, in Madurai on Thursday. MADURAI: A significant pact to empower college students, especially those from rural areas and first-generation learners, was inked between the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and Madurai Kamaraj University here on Thursday. The memorandum of understanding for ‘University-Industry Consortium on Knowledge Partnership for Employability’ envisages a chain of action, starting from teachers. State-wide initiativeThe CII will facilitate training of trainers (teachers) by experts in soft skills, who, in turn, will train other teachers. This capacity-building will enable teachers to train students in the classroom. This State-wide initiative of the CII will be formally launched at the university on September 18. Manikam Ramaswami, chairman of CII, Tamil Nadu State Council, said that though development parameters of the State were very good, on the flip side only 25 per cent of its graduates were readily employable. He was confident that another 25 per cent would be made employable, by improving their soft skills, in the near future. The CII planned to train 10, 000 teachers and hoped to sign similar agreements with other universities. An MoU had already been signed with Manonmaniam Sundaranar University, Tirunelveli. R. Karpaga Kumaravel, Vice-Chancellor, Madurai Kamaraj University, said unemployability was a more serious problem than unemployment, and it was essential that skills of students matched the expectations of the industry. Three-pronged approachK. S. Bharath, vice-chairman of CII, Madurai zone, said the initiative would feature a three-pronged approach of experts preparing modules and resource persons training trainers who, in turn, would train teachers.
