Heated exchange over tax increase move at Corporation council meeting

Special Correspondent

TIRUPUR: All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam councillors clashed with Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam members at the Tirupur Corporation council meeting on Thursday over the civic body’s proposal to increase Property Tax rates.

The resolution for the increase was placed before the council for the second time, after it was deferred last month. Former MLA and AIADMK member C. Sivasamy began the debate by asking why the resolution should be placed in the Council when the majority of the councillors were against an increase.

Mr. Sivasamy and Communist Party of India member P.R. Natarajan called upon Mayor K. Selvaraj to explore ways to improve tax collection with the existing rates, instead of placing a huge burden on the people.

They wanted the Corporation to bring non-assessed buildings under the tax net and also identify those that were paying taxes much lower than they should. The Mayor responded by saying that a committee had been formed to look into these issues and also find ways to improve revenue collection.

Though the Mayor initially spoke of deferring the resolution, he later made an emotional appeal for passing it. He said the tax raise was only aimed at providing better amenities to the people. Sensing resistance even to lower rates, he said: "If you want the resolution deferred, we will do it. But, if you want to reject it, so be it."

Corporation Commissioner M. Ashokan pointed out that the council did not have the powers to reject a Government proposal to increase the tax. Mr. Sivasamy contended that the Government had left the choice of increasing it or rejecting the proposal to the local bodies.

When Mr. Sivasamy asked why the Government could not provide special funds when it offers free television sets, a verbal clash broke out in the Council.

Councillor’s protest

DMK Councillor L.M. Masood of Ward 47 attended the council meeting without wearing a shirt. He said this was a mark of protest over no development works being carried out in his ward.
