“Bharat Nirman Scheme will help to create infrastructure in rural areas”

Special Correspondent

ARNI: All Centrally-sponsored welfare schemes are being implemented in an exemplary manner in Tamil Nadu, thanks to the cordial relationship between the Central and State governments, Food Minister E.V. Velu has said.

He was inaugurating a five-day Bharat Nirman Public Information Campaign organised by the Press Information Bureau (PIB), Chennai, and all departments of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting at Government Boys Higher Secondary School ground here on Wednesday.

Mr. Velu said that as against the minimum of 33 per cent reservation for women in local bodies stipulated by the Panchayati Raj Act, the Tamil Nadu government was providing 40 per cent reservation to women.

The Bharat Nirman Scheme was being implemented to create new infrastructure in the rural areas, he said.

M. Rajendran, Tiruvannamalai Collector, who presided, said Tamil Nadu was a forerunner in the implementation of several new schemes in the country. Several development works were going on in the rural areas, thanks to the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme, which was implemented in the first phase in Tiruvannamalai. Tamil Nadu had exceeded the target in the implementation of the Bharat Nirman scheme.

Earlier, Mr. Velu inaugurated the exhibition put up by various Central and State government departments, banks and non-governmental organisations. He distributed welfare aids worth Rs.68 lakh to 472 beneficiaries.
