Compound walls cave in due to rain

Staff Reporter

MADURAI: The compound walls on eastern and western sides of Anbagam, a home for the mentally retarded people at DRO Colony, crashed on Wednesday night following heavy rain, giving a nightmarish experience to the inmates.

Principal of SBT College for Special Education Sr. Starlet said that water flowing from the nearby police ground broke the western and eastern walls owing to lack of proper outlet.

“This is the third time that the walls have been pushed down causing inconvenience to the mentally retarded children and B. Ed. students who stay on the premises,” she said.

The sprawling premises of about four acres houses as many as 160 mentally retarded people, including 40 adults.

Similarly, around 25 B. Ed. college students stay on the premises.
