Note blames college principal

Victim’s batch mates stage demonstration

HYDERABAD: Sravanti, 19, a degree first year student, committed suicide by hanging in her room at Madhuban Hostel for Working Women in Dilsukhnagar on Wednesday, the police said.

Controversy is brewing over the death after the police seized a suicide note, purportedly written by her, stated that the Principal of Siddartha College for Women where she was pursuing B.Com. course, was responsible for her death. The victim’s co-students held a demonstration at the college demanding action against the principal.

The student hailing from Devarakonda of Nalgonda district, left for her village for Rakhee festival few days ago and returned to the hostel in the morning.

Body found

She stayed back in the room while her roommates went to college. The hostel workers grew suspicious as she did not come out even in the afternoon.

They peeped through the window only to see Sravanti’s body hanging from the ceiling. “We stumbled upon a note believed to have been written by Sravanti while searching the room,” the Saroornagar Inspector L.A. Bhaskar told reporters.

In the note she appealed to her parents not to grieve over her death. It was signed in her name. Police said the note would be sent to forensic experts to ascertain if it was Sravanti’s handwriting.

They questioned the college principal, Goverdhani, about the student’s death but the latter said she never annoyed the student on any matter. “A case of abetment to suicide would be registered against the principal after making further inquiries,” the Inspector said.
