Corrections and clarifications

There were a few queries on the location and launch date of a device seen in a standalone Reuters picture titled “Exoskeleton aid” (“International” page, August 27, 2008). The caption was “Back on His Feet: Radi Kaiof walks using an exoskeleton in this recent photo. Paralysed for the past 20 years, he now walks using, ReWalk, which requires crutches to help with balance, and consists of motorised leg supports, sensors and a pack to carry a control box and batteries.” The unedited Reuters caption said “Radi Kaiof walks using an electronic exoskeleton at a development center in the northern city of Haifa [Israel] August 18, 2008. The device, called ReWalk, slated for commercial sales in 2010, consists of motorised leg supports, body sensors and a back pack containing a computerised control box and rechargable batteries. It also requires crutches to help with balance. Picture taken August 18, 2008.” (ReWalk is made by Argo Medical Technologies Ltd., Israel.)

The name of India’s bronze medal winner (boxing), at the Beijing Olympics, is Vijender Singh. The caption of the accompanying photograph in a Delhi report called him Virender Kumar. (The photograph showed Congress party president Sonia Gandhi with the two Olympic bronze medal winners.) The report, “MCD to name road after Bronze medal winner Sushil Kumar” (Delhi, August 27, 2008, page 3), called him Vijender Kumar.

Similarly, the caption of the accompanying photograph in a report “Boisterous welcome for heroes” (“Sport”, August 27, 2008), and which showed President Pratibha Patil with the two bronze medal winners, called him Vijender Kumar.

The caption of the accompanying photograph in a report “‘We are primed for England tour’” (“Sport”, August 26, 2008) was “Raring To Go: India captain Mithali Raj flanked by Sandhya Agarwal (manager) and Shantha Rangaswamy (coach) during a press conference”, leading to a query on their identities. It should have been (from left to right) Sandhya Agarwal, Mithali Raj and Shantha Rangaswamy.

In connection with a PTI report “Five Indians detained in Malaysia” (August 6, 2008), Mr. Norlin Othman, Deputy High Commissioner, High Commission of Malaysia, New Delhi, says: “While the title and dateline (Kuala Lumpur) gave the impression that the event happened in Malaysia, the news is actually on an event that occurred in another country (Indonesia). Jayapura is the capital of the province of Papuan, which is part of Indonesia. The title of the news item is factually wrong.”
