Power cut to go from Monday

Authorities confident of meeting normal demand of 110 to 115 mu a day

Bangalore is being supplied 55 mu of power a day
Power supply firms told to refrain from loadshedding

BANGALORE: The State Government has decided to lift power cut from September 1. Briefing presspersons after a meeting of the State Cabinet here on Wednesday, Minister for Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Shobha Karandlaje and Principal Secretary, Department of Energy, K. Jairaj, said that the authorities were confident of meeting the normal demand of 110 million units (mu) to 115 million units a day.

The hydel reservoirs had storage to ensure generation of 5,000 mu a day against the last year’s level of 7,000 mu. Six of the seven units of the Raichur Thermal Power Station were working to capacity and generating 25 mu to 26 mu a day.

The Bellary Thermal Power Station was also generating 300 MW of power. The State would purchase 100 MW of power from Chhattisgarh from the next month at a tariff of Rs 7.85 a unit and another 100 MW from the Tatas and Jindal power plants at a price ranging from Rs. 7.50 to Rs. 7.80 a unit.

The Central grid was supplying 22 MW to 23 MW of power to the State against the normal supply of 30 MW to 32 MW owing to technical snags, Mr. Jairaj said.

Stating that the electricity supply companies had been instructed to refrain from load-shedding, Mr. Jairaj said different parts of Bangalore city as well as the districts have been experiencing outages as part of the grid frequency maintenance steps when the demand exceeded the supply causing the 220 kVs lines to trip.

The electricity authorities would be able to meet the energy demand if there was no drastic increase in the demand. Bangalore city alone was being supplied 55 mu a day to meet the present load requirement, he said.

Power dues

Ms. Karandlaje said the accumulated electricity dues of farmers to various electricity supply companies was over Rs. 2,682.43 crore apart from an interest of Rs. 654.7 crore. The Cabinet decided to give the option to farmers of clearing the entire arrears of Rs. 3,337.13 crore in eight quarterly instalments over the next two years provided they gave an undertaking.
