The law and order situation in the three outlying regions of the Union Territory- Karaikal, Mahe and Yanam, provided a distinct picture. Statistics available with the Police Headquarters here showed that the three regions reported a fewer crime rate with Yanam having a better record. Yanam region, situated around 900 km away from here and bounded on all sides by the East Godavari districts of Andhra Pradesh, did not have any murder cases reported in 2007 and the situation remained the same during the current year till August 24. Last case of murder reported in the region was during 2004 and 2006. Similarly, there were no case of dacoity or rape reported during the years 2004, 2005, 2007 and it remained the same during the current year till August 24. A case of robbery was reported in 2005 and a few cases of house break-ins during night were reported during the last five years. In the past five years, Yanam reported seven fatal accident cases and around 10 motor vehicle thefts. During the same period, the region reported 10 molestation cases and nine eve-teasing cases. As far as Mahe region, situated around 700 km away and bordering the Northern districts of Kerala, the situation was more or less similar. During the last five years there was a single case of murder reported in 2007 and 10 incidents of attempt to murder. While there was not even a single case of dacoity reported in the last five years, one incident of robbery was reported in 2005. During the same period, one incident of house break during night, 13 cases of house break during day and seven motor vehicle thefts were reported. So far as accident cases are concerned, the region reported eight fatal mishaps. There were also one incident of rape and nine molestation cases reported during the same period. As far as the law and order situation in Kariakal was concerned it had more number of cases among the three regions. The region in the last five years had ten cases of murder and 15 cases of attempt to murder. While there were no cases of dacoity, one each case of robbery was reported in 2005 and 2006, 37 cases of house break incidents during night were reported. However, the region had reported a large number of fatal accident as well as minor accident cases. In the past five years 126 fatal accidents were reported, out of which 42 cases were reported in the year 2006. Till August 24, only six fatal accident cases were reported during the current year. Senior police officers said though the three regions have its own significance when it comes to security, the law and order situation was well under control. While Yanam is close to Naxal affected districts of Andhra Pradesh, Mahe region lay bordering the politically sensitive districts of Kerala such as Kannur, where there were frequent clashes between the cadres of Communist Party of India (Marxist) and Bharathiya Janata Party a senior official said. Officials said there was only a very remote chance of Naxal groups getting any space in Yanam for establishing base owing to its social character. From the security point of view Karaikal is the most vulnerable place in the Union Territory, a senior official said adding several fundamentalist organisations have sympathisers in Ambagarathur, Vanjore and Neravy. The Kariakal police have already held talks with their counterparts from the neighbouring districts of Tamil Nadu to share information. Several such meetings have been planned in the coming months, he said.
