10,000 trees to be planted in Mangalore

Special Correspondent

The scheme will be assisted by MCC

MANGALORE: The Mangalore City Corporation and the Mangalore Division of Karnataka Forest Department have, in association with the city-based Citizen Forum, launched a programme to plant about 10,000 saplings in the city.

Speaking to presspersons on the sidelines of a “jatha” to create awareness about the need to plant trees here on Saturday, District Forest Officer Vijaya Kumar said that the corporation had agreed, in principle, to sponsor the programme and provide protection and irrigate the plants at Rs. 10 lakh. The plants would need water in summer, between January and May. The corporation’s funds would be used for this purpose, he said.

Mr. Vijaya Kumar said the saplings would be planted in empty places and “simple protection” given using the money expected from the corporation. Some banks, schools and industries had come forward to take plants and grow them in open areas, he said. Conceding that the purpose of the programme would be defeated if the plants were not properly protected, he said spreading awareness through sustained campaign among people was the only solution.
