Staff Correspondent

It was an introduction of Special Olympic games

54 special children from 14 schools participated in the event

It was aimed at promoting friendship between them and normal children

MYSORE: It was a unique event organised here recently for special children. Fifty-four such children, aged between 8 and 12 from 14 schools, enjoyed playing indoor and outdoor games with normal children.

The event was held on the campus of Block Education Resource Centre, South Zone, Lakshmipuram. The games in which they participated included football, volleyball, shuttle relay, zigzag running, floor hockey, passing the ball through ring, target shooting, power lifting and bowling.

The event was an inclusive sport utility and an introduction of the concept of Special Olympic games at the primary school level. There was no competition, no pressure and no special rules to follow. It was organised for fun. And it was “Special Olympics Get In To It”.

The aim was to promote friendship between them and normal children. Mysore, Bangalore, Davangere, Madikeri and Mangalore have been identified under the programme for special children, “SO Get In To It” (Special Olympics Get In To It). The Mattel Children’s Foundation of the United States and the Special Olympics Bharat-Karnataka are the main sponsors of the programme.

This acceptance, empowerment and entertainment programme for special children was launched here on Thursday.

Mythri Charitable Trust, an institution formed to impart education and empowerment programmes for special children, has been identified as a partnership organisation in Mysore.

Senior journalist Krishna Vattam inaugurated the programme. He said the programme would help in bringing special children to mainstream education through sports and games.
