Put on hold activities, Jehad Council tells militants

Shujaat Bukhari

SRINAGAR: The United Jehad Council on Saturday asked militants to put on hold their activities in the Kashmir Valley. This comes in the wake of heightened demands for “Azadi.”

Kashmir News Service, a local news agency quoted Syed Salahuddin, head of the UJC, a 13-member amalgam of militant organisations, as asking separatist politicians to pass a resolution for “freedom” and limit their struggle to achieving the goal of “right to self- determination.”

“The UJC has unanimously decided to silence the guns in Kashmir. We have decided that no active militant will display weapons in public during the rallies and marches,” KNS quoted Salahuddin, who is operating from Muzaffarabad, capital of PoK.

He said the militants had been asked to put their activities in Kashmir on hold in the areas where rallies for freedom were taking place. Such a step would not give the security forces any excuse to open fire on unarmed protesters. He, however, clarified that militants would continue to strike at troopers in border areas, where there was no population.

Salahuddin, who is also the Supreme Commander of the Hizbul Mujahideen, urged the Hurriyat Conference to pass a freedom resolution before the people at the next public rally
