CHENNAI: Promising tennis player V.M. Ranjeet won the T.K. Ramanathan award at the annual day function of the Tamil Nadu Tennis Association (TNTA) at the SDAT Tennis Stadium, here on Saturday.

Thrilled at receiving the award from one of his idols — Ramanathan Krishnan — Ranjeet said he would strive towards inching up the ATP ladder in the years to come.

Speaking on the occasion, the TNTA President, V. Narayanan, enumerated the achievements of the association in the past one year.

“The Chennai Open-2007 was ranked the best-organised tournament among 63 ATP events. Another feather in TNTA’s cap is our unique access to two premier international coaching institutes — the Nick Bollettieri Academy at Florida and the Sanchez-Casal Academy in Spain — where we can send promising players to hone their skills,” he said.

The Sports Editor of The Hindu and chief guest for the evening, Nirmal Shekar, said the TNTA’s efficient manner of working was a laudable exception to the general rule of mis-management that plagued other sports organisations in the country. “It is a bonus for any young tennis player to start out in Tamil Nadu. The driving force for tennis administrators in this State is a genuine love of the game,” he said.
