12 teams were selected to present their work at the International Humanitarian Championship

BANGALORE: When the 12 selected teams made their presentations on the projects they had taken up at the first inter-school International Humanitarian Championship, organised by the Humanitarian Hands Trust at Chowdiah Memorial Hall here on Thursday, they proved yet again why actions speak louder than words.

Students from 50 city schools had taken up humanitarian work in July. They visited orphanages and slums and helped destitute people. The teams then sent a CD on the projects they had taken up to the organisers.

Twelve projects were selected for the finals. When these 12 teams shared their experiences, it brought tears to the eyes of several people in the audience.

Ajay Srinivasan and Cyril Avinash, students of St. John’s High School, were part of a team of students that worked with destitute people. “We worked on the project after school hours. Our teachers told us to work on the project whole-heartedly and not to only concentrate on winning the championship. ,” Cyril said.

Shanta Susheela, a teacher of the school, said that though the students come from well-off families, they willingly agreed to help people in need. “They have promised to continue the good work,” she said.

Students of CMR National Public School visited an orphanage and shared chocolates with the children there. They enacted skits to create awareness among the children about the dangers of smoking and drinking. “We have realised that there are numerous people suffering outside our homes,” a student said.

The team from Sophia High School spent time with the children at Bosco Mane, a home for destitute children. “We collected clothing and books for them. We conducted a drawing competition for them and also interacted with them on health and hygiene. We also want to pay for the heart surgery of a six-year-old boy in Bosco Mane,” said Sushmita, a student.

Ravi Melwani, Managing Trustee, Humanitarian Hands Trust, gave away the prizes.

St. Joseph’s Boys High School won the first prize and received Rs. 1 lakh and a rolling trophy. St. Joseph’s Girls High School won the second prize and received Rs. 25,000 and certificates. The third prize went to the Sree Cauvery School team, which received gift vouchers for Rs. 250 each.
