Varun, Kerchiyal emerge champions

CHENNAI: Chennai’s M. Varun and J. Kerchiyal of Tiruvannamalai District won the senior boys’ and girls’ individual titles respectively in the final of the Rotary inter-district Olympiad, which concluded at the SDAT-Nehru Sports Complex, here on Friday.

Chennai (112.5 points) bagged the overall championship, while Tiruvannamalai (61.5) finished second and Kancheepuram (41) came third.

Vellakoil MP, Swaminathan, Minister for Highways and Ports, Government of Tamil Nadu, the chief guest, distributed the prizes.

R. Sekar, Additional Director General of Police and Commissioner of Police (Greater Chennai) and S.N. Uma, Senior Vice-President, Strategic Inititiatives, NIIT, School of Learning Solutions, were the guests of honour.

The top three athletes totalling around 600 school children from the districts — Vellore, Tiruvannamalai, Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur and Chennai — took part in the final here.

Cash prizes and cups were distributed to the top three winners for the inter-district Olympiad. adidas shoes were given to the winner of every event in the final.

V. Balaji (Kancheepuram) was the individual champion in the junior boys’ category, while Samiya Nasim (Chennai) won the individual title in the junior girls’ category. — Principal Correspondent
