NEW DELHI: Describing the situation in Jammu and Kashmir as “very serious,” secretary of the J&K unit of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) Mohammad Yousuf Tarigami has urged Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to personally intervene and hold talks to resolve the Amarnath land row. Addressing a press conference here on Thursday, Mr. Tarigami said the Prime Minister should hold talks with the Amarnath Sangharsh Samiti and separatist leaders so that the issue was resolved as per the aspirations of both regions. “If the present crisis is not resolved in time, it is bound to destroy the social fabric of the State,” Mr. Tarigami warned. Claiming that the inadequate response from the government had aggravated the situation, the CPI(M) leader said the “ad hoc” approach should be given up. He demanded that the government immediately announce adequate compensation for those affected, and ensure smooth traffic on the Srinagar-Jammu national highway. “The recent developments have necessitated fulfilling of some legitimate demands, including a reduction in the disproportionate strength of troops, release of prisoners, and opening of the Srinagar-Muzaffarabad, Poonch-Rawalkote and Jammu-Sialkot roads for trade.” The CPI(M) leader met the Prime Minister and some leaders of the BJP.
