Convicted in cheating case

Defrauded victim of Rs. 6.71 lakh

Coimbatore: The Judicial Magistrate Court III has convicted and sentenced V. Manikandan alias Ayyappan of Neelikonampalayam near Singanallur to undergo rigorous imprisonment for one year and to pay a fine of Rs 1,000 in a case of cheating.

C.V. Ganapathy of Agraharam area had preferred a complaint stating that the accused had cheated him to the tune of Rs 6.71 lakh, promising to enrich the victim by running a prospective business.

It is learnt that the victim threatened the complainant with dire consequences when he sought repayment of the funds.

Based on the complaint, a case was registered on March 29, 2001 and the accused was charge sheeted on November 9, 2001.

The trial was expedited and on August 19, the judge awarded the conviction and imposed a fine on the accused.
