Unversity meet prize money hiked

NEW DELHI: The Sports Ministry on Thursday increased the prize money for university teams, contending for the Maulana Abul Kalam Azad trophy.

After the hike, top three teams will get Rs. 10 lakh, Rs. five lakh and Rs. three lakh in that order. Previously, the prize money was Rs. two lakh for the first-ranked university, Rs one lakh for the second and Rs 50,000 for the third.

The Union Sports Minister, M.S. Gill, said, “Schools, colleges and universities are our pools of talent and the arena where sports talents are identified, nurtured and brought up. The present prize money is pittance for the universities, which spend heavily on sports promotion.”
