CHENNAI: Veteran Bharatanatyam exponent and academician C.V. Chandrasekhar has been chosen for the Kalidas Samman in the field of dance. The award, instituted by the Madhya Pradesh government, comprises a citation and Rs. 2 lakh in cash.
“It feels very special,” said his daughter, Chitra Chandrasekhar, who has learnt under him for over 40 years. “He is a special person, as a father, and a fantastic teacher. We are very honoured.”
Another daughter and student Manjari Chandrasekhar said, “We are very happy due to this recognition. It is very heartening for the family.”
“C.V. Chandrasekhar is unique,” said Ashish Khokar, critic and dance historian. “Today, at 70-plus, he continues to be an active male dancer like Birju Maharaj. A performer, teacher and choreographer, he has taken Bharatnatyam to the north and west India. He has also produced exceptional students,” Mr. Khokar said.
