COIMBATORE: The Tamil Nadu Association of Cottage and Micro Industries has appealed to the State Government to identify land in Coimbatore district and form an industrial estate for the micro units. Association president J. James has said in a release that over 25,000 micro and cottage industries were functioning in Coimbatore and nearby places. However, at least 80 per cent of the units were operating on rented premises with just 10 to 15 machinery and doing job orders. Even if the units had to complete emergency orders they were unable to run the machinery at night since a large number of the work sheds were in residential areas. Mr. James appealed to the Government to identify land within 20 km radius of the city and develop an industrial estate for these units. He sought exemption for the micro units from the weekly power holiday. Apart from the holiday, the industries were hit with unannounced power cuts every day.
