THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Centre for Development of Imaging Technology is planning to introduce a number of projects, including a finishing school, as part of its 20th anniversary. C-DIT registrar K.T. Balabhaskar said in a release here on Thursday that the finishing school would be set up with the cooperation of the IT Mission at the ITES Habitat Centre in Kochi. The school aimed at exploring the possibilities of Free Software for starting training facilities and providing software to public institutions free. The centre was set up in 1978 with the Chief Minister as chairman for promoting research and training in imaging technology. As many as 14 divisions, comprising visual communication, web servicing, technology extension, e-governance, optical image processing, educational informatics, software engineering, computational linguistics, communication training, open source technology, new media and animation, video documentary, ‘Sutharya Keralam’ and news service, are now functioning at the centre. The centre had set up digital image printers in all sub-registrar offices in the State. This has made the task of getting copies of land documents on demand within minutes. Gazette reference has been made easy by launching an online version of the Kerala Gazette. IT coursesIt has been proposed to start 11 new IT courses under the technology extension division. Arrangements for starting computer courses in 100 Akshaya e-centres are nearing completion. Fee concession is being offered to indigent students. A placement cell would start functioning this year. In addition to postgraduate diploma courses in television and new media and e-learning, certificate courses in photo journalism, television anchoring, video camera and radio programme production would begin this month, Mr. Balabhaskar said. Two regional offices at Ernakulam and Kannur and an advanced technology centre for coordinating the functioning of various C-DIT units in the capital would be opened this year. It has been proposed to take up projects worth Rs.40 crore this year. Approval for projects worth Rs.18 crore have been secured within the first four months itself, Mr. Balabhaskar said.
