Narayanan reviews J&K situation

SRINAGAR: National Security Adviser M.K. Narayanan on Wednesday reviewed the security and political situation in Jammu and Kashmir at a high level meeting with Governor N.N. Vohra and his advisers. The government has also pushed Track-II activists into an informal dialogue with the separatists in Kashmir even as a four-member panel is likely to begin talks with Shri Amarnath Sangarsh Samiti on Thursday.

Mr. Narayanan, accompanied by a team which included Director of the Intelligence Bureau P.C. Haldar, had elaborate talks with Mr. Vohra, his advisers H.H. Tayabji, S.S. Belorea and C. Phonsog, Chief Secretary S.S. Kapur, Director-General of Police Kuldip Khoda, Corps Commander Lt. Gen. Mukesh Sabharwal and other officials.

The meeting also reviewed the situation in Jammu and the NSA was told of the Sangarsh Samiti’s announcement to enter into a dialogue. The Governor has nominated a four-member panel for the talks.

Meanwhile, efforts to reach out to the separatists on the current crisis have begun. A top women peace activist, who is involved in the peace initiative in Kashmir, arrived here on Wednesday. The Track-II process is aimed at addressing the immediate concerns of the separatists in the backdrop of the “economic blockade”.

70 injured in clashes

In Jammu, violence returned to the streets on Wednesday and 70 people, including police personnel, were injured.

Following this, curfew was clamped in the violence-affected areas.

But defying curfew orders, people came out to protest and courted arrest. Wednesday was the last day for the people to court arrest in response to a call by the Shri Amarnath Sangarsh Samiti.
