Weavers’ society submits proposal

TIRUCHI: The Kodiyampalayam Mariamman Saliyar Handloom Weavers’ Cooperative Society in Thottiyam block has submitted a proposal to the State Government for the construction of a quarters-cum-handlooms shed for the benefit of its members.

The quarters will provide accommodation to 25 weavers who could use the looms shed for their weaving activities, society manager N. Krishnan said while speaking at the members education programme held recently.

The society accounted for 238 members with 115 handlooms. The members produced export quality sarees. During 2007-08 alone, the members produced Rs. 25.72 lakh worth sarees and other handloom varieties. Due to the cooperation extended by the members, the society has been earning profit every year, he added.

Tiruchi District Cooperative Union special officer S. Mathivanan said counselling was being provided to the member weavers by the Handlooms Department. .
