Students to launch campaign against global warming

TIRUCHI: Going beyond creating awareness of safeguarding environment through tree plantation, about 100 students of Exnora Club of Holy Cross College have planned to undertake campaigns and training programmes on ‘global warming’ for three months from September in Corporation limits.

The Club members will explain to students of schools and other colleges and the public the causes and effects of global warming and the ways to control it.

The awareness initiative will cover at least 1,000 people, Mena Seetharaman, Staff Advisor, Students’ Exnora, said.

Students will begin by conducting the campaign in their neighbourhoods during weekends and later move on to schools and colleges. About 100 students are to be trained and each student is expected to conduct one or two programmes with the help of slides and charts, said Ms. Mena.

At the trainers’ training programme conducted for about 100 students on Wednesday by S.P. Mohan, Tamil Nadu State president of Youth and Students’ Exnora, the participants were oriented on public speaking to transfer their knowledge on global warming and climatic changes effectively.

With a request letter from the College, the students will approach other institutions to engage students for a 45-minute duration to sensitise the younger generation to the melting of glaciers causing a rise in sea level.

For the first time in the State, students of a single institution will be undertaking a mass public campaign on the vital issue, Mr. Mohan said.

Inputs on the impact of global warming felt at the local level would be incorporated into the campaign material. Instances of local impact include the difficulties being experienced indoors by city residents without fans despite the culmination of summer, and the fall in generation of wind energy last month due to the climatic change, said Mr. Mohan.
