KARIMNAGAR: The district mines and geology department is making strides with the steady increase of its income through the mining operations of colour granite, stone and metal quarrying and sand quarries. The mines and geology department annual income had rose from Rs. 7.62 crore in the year 2001-02 to Rs. 72.20 crore in the year 2007-08. During this financial year, the department had set a target of Rs. 85.69 crore. Talking to The Hindu here on Tuesday, Assistant Director (Mines and Geology) N.V. Bhagavantha Reddy said that they were exploring possibilities of excavating the iron ore, which are available in Dharmaram, Velgatoor, Gollapalli and Manthani Mutharam mandals. He said that they had found magnetite variety of iron ore in Dharmaram and Velgatoor mandals. He also said that the Geological Survey of India had submitted a report about the feasibility of an iron ore exploration in Chandoli village of Gollapalli mandal in about 290 acres of land. He said that the AP Genco was planning for the excavation of coal from the Tadicherla forests in the district for its thermal power projects. On the granite industry boom, he said that there were about 210 colour granite quarries in the district. He said that about 10,000 to 15,000 cubic meters of colour granite was being exported to China, Taiwan and Gulf countries.
