Krishna water release postponed
T. Ramakrishnan
CHENNAI: The release of Krishna water from Andhra Pradesh to Tamil Nadu has been postponed to September 10 against the original date of August 25.
The delay has been attributed to the time taken in lining and strengthening of the Kandaleru-Poondi canal’s stretch in Tamil Nadu. The Sathya Sai Trust is carrying out the works.
Last week, Kondala Rao, adviser (water) of the Andhra Pradesh Government, held discussions with Public Works Minister Durai Murugan.
Mr. Rao explained to the authorities of Tamil Nadu the reasons behind the delay in the execution. Rain, flow of backwater of Satyamurti Sagar, constraints in renewal of permits for sand and gravel and inundation of sand quarries were among the reasons cited. Tamil Nadu impressed upon the official that the release should not be delayed beyond September 10.
As the 1983 agreement between the two States talks of water release between July and October, Tamil Nadu wanted the release to be extended to November in the event of the northeast monsoon playing truant. Andhra Pradesh responded favourably to the idea.
